I'm now running two Masterclasses back to back on a Monday on the Gold Coast, which gives me time to overlap the demos and polish my scribbles. This one started out of a quick scribble to describe the workings of Divine Proportion ( In Corel Painter 11 ) and ended up as a future New York with it's gated community inside the class dome and the working classes outside.

Not a great photo to showcase the final as it's a bit posterized yet fuzzy at the same time. Also some glare due to drying glazes. Will post a better photo when the painting is dry and given an even coat of varnish next week.

A series of minor unfortunate events ( work, dentist, etc...) kept me from completing Medusa this week. Here is a close up from the few hours I had on it ( the original contrast is brighter than this photo could capture). Fingers crossed the art will be complete next Thursday.

Here is a rough painting using Corel Painter done live yesterday without reference ( although my mind was filled with Frazetta, Boris and Brom), to show students how to dive into Painter's workshop and start making marks...

This is it varnished and ready for packing off to it's new home. The colours and value are as close to the original as possible when viewed on a calabrated screen. The painting was photographed in the best possible light to avoid glare ( two 45 degree lights equally lit from each side ).

It was with great sadness that I learned today of the death of Ellie Frazetta, wife and tireless promoter of legendary fantasy artist Frank Frazetta.

I met Ellie only once when I spent a day at the Frank Frazetta museum a couple of years ago. She was very generous with her time, greeted my wife and me at the door and sat with me as I showed my portfolio ( she had asked if I was an illustrator ).

Afterwards I spent a long time studying every original Frazetta artwork and she shared many stories about Frank with us. By the end of the day I felt I knew her quite well as she was very down to earth, reminding me of my own irish family back home.

The best memory I took away from that day was when Ellie gasped at one of my portfolio paintings. I said, 'Ellie, was that a gasp?' and she said, 'Yes.' A simple moment but a greater complement I couldn't have wished for from the wife of Frank Frazetta.

My heart goes out to Frank and his family.

IlluXCon Remarque Sketches

Here are some scans of the personalised, remarqued IlluXCon poster sketches. The last two were trials done in 2B pencil on dry paper. When the posters arrived though, they were pretty glossy and I ended up using an 8B pencil that looked like 2H! There was no room for error as an eraser just made big black streaks and tissue wouldn't smudge! Still, they turned out well in a lighter style...

IlluXCon 2008

Well, IlluXCon was fantastic!

It was incredible to find Boris & Julie at my screen demo/ talk, 'The Trials & Tribulations of an Irish Illustrator Abroad' and I was knocked out when Boris spoke from the audience on how humbled he was to have played a part in inspiring 'such fantastic artwork'. Was it a dream? You're an incredible man, Boris; I'll treasure those words. ( I already owe you for years of unpaid teaching!)

To top it all off, Darkdreamer ( blog title art ) was nominated for a Chesley award during the show, Justin Sweet gave me a signed print, Charles Vess bought me lunch, and the wonderful Julie Bell drew a surprise pen drawing for me! Unexpected gifts! Did Christmas come early? I was a kid again!

Like a war time situation great friendships were made in an incredibly short period. I won’t name you all here as it may look like it’s in order of preference (although… you know it’s you I loved best). Below are some photos. Not everyone was around when a camera was at hand, so if you have photos you can send to amend this, please do, as I’d like to have a complete set. Feel free to take mine too...

Lee Moyer ( a great illustrator himself ) attended the show and did some reportage!

...The show itself was quite interesting. There were many people there I knew, from Charles Vess to Steve Prescott. Others I'd spoken to briefly - Omar Rayyan and Ruth Sanderson. And there were others I got to meet for the first time - Tiffany Prothero, Vincent Villafranca, Daren Bader.

The demos were entertaining. In the Justin Sweet Digital Painting demo it was all knuckles and know-how. In the Carles Vess fantasy art lecture, it was all collectors. Patrick Jones' (from Ireland by way of Australia) demo could have been billed as comedy, as he was hilarious. The thing that really struck me about most of the painting demos we say was the painter's ability to draw married to a completely relaxed painting style. They used layer after layer of paint and create an almost subliminal depth to their work. I'd see perfectly viable face rubbed out and reworked. And then, when things were looking fine, reworked again. It's so very counterintuitive to me, since I'm all about getting it done!

It was great to meet so many folks, including a bunch who came up from Firaxis Games north of Baltimore. Their fearless leader worked for Broadcast Arts back in the day too. Funny world of strange connections... I had a lovely chat with Audrey Price (aka Mrs Michael Whelan) and it may be that we can do something together sometime. She loved the design of my Literary Pin Up calendar and should Michael do another calendar, she'd get me to design it...

The really inspiring part was the group painting demo, where a surprising fiery Michael Whelan took a piece by Dave Stewart and Bob Eggleton that wasn't gelling and made it his own. He was fast, incisive and brutal with oil paint. It was a revelation to the audience, but I think, more importantly it was revelatory to him. And it was glorious to watch it happen. To see him take a piece to the floor, wipe huge sections away, return it to the easel, then paint something new and fine in its place ~ he was a man possessed.

Heaven knows there are a million things to think of and remember from the show, from Justin Sweet's steely resolve in the face of me guessing what big project he and Vance Kovaks were working on, to the cleverness of Mark Zug...
